Love Us The truth is, I love us. I love our shared identity, but I also love the things that make us different. I love how we look; our dark hair and how each strand is a pathway to our ancestors. Our eyes that have looked at the stars for centuries of night skies. Our skin that ranges from milky, light cream like the moon; to deep, rich brown like the Earth who nurtured us. I love our food and how it represents the different ways our mothers told us “I love you.” I love our clothes as expressions of who we are and of who our ancestors were before they fought back against the threat from the West. I love the stories we pass down to our children so that they may know where we come from too. One month is stupid—it’s not enough to show how much I love us year round. It took me forever to get here, to love who I am, but I’m happy to be here.
